The Rice House

When the big black wooden gate opens and you step into the tropical garden of The Rice House, it feels like entering the premises of a converted colonial planters house, perfectly located in front of paddy fields. The house boasts character mainly caused by the high wooden ceilings with king trusses, terra cotta tiles on the floor, antique doors and windows and the hand picked antiques and collectibles used to furnish the house. 16 people can stay in this beautiful villa.

When your goal is to explore Sri Lanka it is probably wise not to pick the Rice House as your base as it is not easy to drag yourself out of the several lounge seats that you will find on the verandas.

The main veranda is facing the paddy fields. A very panoramic view where you can watch the abundant wildlife like the dancing peacocks, king fishers and water buffalos. Here you can relax at its best listening to the tropical sounds. In the early evening you can even hear the chanting of monks of the temple a kilometer away.

The Rice House is tucked away in a 1 acre plot of land next to a small village with a very authentic Sri Lankan Bakery. It feels like you are away from it all, but you are close enough to visit the lively Galle (25 minutes by tuk tuk) and Unawatuna (15 minutes by tuk tuk) .
